Giant tornado in Datça
Citizens in the Datça district of Muğla were surprised by a giant tornado that formed in the sea on Sunday.
The tornado, which started off the coast of Datça at noon before the forecasted rain, was seen and caught on camera in the Kızlan District by Barış Özkan, a sound artist from Datça.
The tornado, which formed over the sea, drew seawater into the air, lasted for about 15 minutes before disappearing over the land.
Describing the moment of the tornado, Barış Özkan said, “A tornado occurred about half an hour ago off the coast of Datça. It was a massive tornado. It came to Uşaklar. I saw that it was pulling everything up from the sea for a period of 15-20 minutes and I took it on video.”
Record number of flights from Babadağ in 2022
The world-famous paragliding centre at Babadağ saw a record-breaking 190 thousand 388 flights in 2022, surpassing the 166 thousand 813 in 2019.
The implementation of the Babadağ Telerferik was instrumental in this achievement, which included tandem and single flights, the International Ölüdeniz Air Games Festival, and the Word Acro Cup, held for the first time this year.
Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Osman Çıralı said, “The tourist season has gone well. The paragliding season has reached its peak. There are still 2 months before the end of the year and we expect this figure will exceed 200 thousand.”
Aquamasters Marmaris-Göcek (Turquoise Swim Series – 3rd Event)
The 17th International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championship Marmaris-Göcek Stage took place in Marmaris from 4-6 November.
“Aquamasters” is a series of open water swimming championships organized annually as three different races in the most famous swimming spots in the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Türkiye since 2015.
1000 athletes between the ages of 9 and 80 competed in the competition which included the Open Water Swimming Championship, the Light Journey Swimming Event, the 2K Open Water Swimming Championship, 4 X 500 m Relay Races, and AQUAKIDS Children’s Swimming Event. The Göcek 5K Open Water Swimming Championship was held on the last day of the championship.
Turkish Airlines wins sustainability award for earth-friendly fuel
Turkish Airlines has received the Airline Sustainability Innovation of the Year award from the Centre for Aviation (CAPA) for its innovative efforts for sustainability.
According to a statement from the national flag carrier on Friday, the airline was honoured for developing the Microalgae-Based Sustainable Bio-Jet Fuel Project (MICRO-JET), in which it worked closely with scientists to develop the world’s first carbon-negative sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The MICRO-Jet project, carried out with Istanbul’s prestigious Bogazici University, aimed to produce biofuels from microalgae using hydro-processed fatty acids and hydrothermal liquefaction methods.
Levent Konukcu, Turkish Airlines’ chief investment and technology officer, said: “As the airline that flies to more countries than any other airline in the world, we appreciate the sustainable aviation fuel as a key element in our sustainability strategy on reducing aviation’s environmental impact.”
Konukcu added that the company is committed to continuing to invest in and support sustainable aviation fuels and focus on the future of the world.

1915 Canakkale Bridge recognised for its construction methodology
The 1915 Canakkale Bridge and Malkara-Canakkale Highway have been selected as the most successful project in the “construction methodology” category by the International Road Federation (IRF).
The IRF announced it during the Global Roads Achievement Awards in the “Roads to Tomorrow Conference” held in Washington, DC, between October 31 and November 3, citing the innovative methods and engineering solutions implemented in the record completion time of four years.
In 2021, the International Road Federation named the 1915 Canakkale Bridge and Motorway Project as the “Most Successful Financing Project of the Year” due to its multi-financing structure with a variety of resources.
The 1915 Canakkale Bridge has so far won 12 financial awards, 1 environmental award, 4 employment awards and 2 engineering awards.
Construction on the bridge began in March 2018 and was completed in early 2022, with a total cost of $3.41 billion.

Türkiye gymnast Adem Asil is men’s rings world champion
Türkiye’s athlete Adem Asil has won the gold medal in the men’s rings event at the 2022 World Gymnastics Championships.
Asil won the top medal with 14,933 points on Saturday — day eight of the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Liverpool.
China’s Jingyuan Zou came in second and Courtney Tulloch from the United Kingdom came in third.
“I can’t explain my emotions. I’m so happy because my first world medal is gold. It is a second World Championship gold for Turkey, so I am very happy,” the 23-year-old gymnast told the media.
