Turkish flag shaped hot air balloons dot the sky in Cappadocia

Turkish flags and Atatürk posters were hung on the baskets of hot air balloons that took off from areas around the town of Göreme in Cappadocia to celebrate the occasion of April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.

One hot air balloon, prepared by Pasha Balloons, which produces local balloons in Nevşehir’s Ürgüp district, in the shape of the Turkish flag also made a special flight for the day.

Mehmet Halis Aydoğan, the chairperson of the company’s board of directors, stated that the balloon with the Turkish flag figure has a dome surface of 432 square meters (4650 square feet).

Pointing out that the balloon will perform a demonstration flight at various points in Turkey during national holidays, “It gives me great pleasure that the balloon in the shape of a Turkish flag has been produced in our country. The dome of the balloon was designed by sticking to the original Turkish flag dimensions. It is the largest among other flag-shaped balloons in the world,” Aydoğan said.

Michelin adds Istanbul to culinary guide, will award stars in fall

From Gordon Ramsay to Marco Pierre White, many know a few Michelin star chefs or restaurants. The famed rating system has been around the world in several countries and cities and it is finally coming to Istanbul, the meeting point of continents, to add the metropolis to its distinguished list of covered cities.

The Michelin Guide will announce Istanbul’s Michelin restaurants – and the number of stars they received – on Oct. 11, a senior official from the company said Thursday.

“To date, the Michelin Guide is present in 37 international destinations, and today I am delighted to announce that Istanbul will become the 38th destination to join the Michelin Guide collection,” Gwendal Poullennec, Michelin Guide’s international director, told a press conference in Istanbul.

The Michelin Guides have been published since 1900 by the French tire company of the same name. According to Michelin Guide’s website, “restaurants may receive zero to 3 stars for the quality of their food based on five criteria: Quality of the ingredients used, mastery of flavor and cooking techniques, the personality of the chef in his cuisine, value for money and consistency between visits.”

“Restaurant inspectors do not look at the interior decor, table setting, or service quality when awarding stars – these are instead indicated by the number of ‘covers’ it receives, represented by the fork and spoon symbol,” it added.

Exhausted bear cub found near Iraqi border gets new home in Turkey

Hakvan is the latest resident of an animal rehabilitation center in the eastern Turkish province of Van. The bear cub was brought there from Hakkari, a nearby province on the Turkish border with Iraq.

He was wandering around, tired and hungry, when locals found him in a rural area, apparently separated from his mother. Named Hakvan (a combination of Hakkari and “hayvan,” Turkish word for animal), the cub was handed over to the wildlife protection authority. Wildlife authorities took care of the cub and released it back into the wild, only for it to show up again in a residential area. Seemingly unable to survive on his own, Hakvan was taken to a center that specializes in caring for wild animals in Van.

The cub is now being nursed back to health. Bottle-fed every three hours and on a special diet, Hakvan is under the watch of vets around the clock. Professor Lokman Aslan, the director of the center, told reporters that they treated dozens of injured animals brought in every year but bears are rare. He said they most recently treated two adult bears who were injured. “(Hakvan) is fine now. He was fed and released back to the spot where he lost his mother but he could not locate her. So, we took him here. He has the perfect habitat here similar to his natural habitat,” he said.

Aslan said the rehabilitation of mammals is a difficult process and once they got accustomed to people, they have trouble going back to nature. “We will apply a special rehabilitation process for him but he will be a longtime guest here,” he said on Wednesday.
