Turkey adopts new measures to protect endangered sea turtles
Turkey has devised a new technique to protect its sea turtles by erecting wooden barriers on five beaches.
The country’s Environment and Urbanization Ministry has planned to create wooden barriers 40-50 meters from the sea to the coast to protect sea turtle nesting areas in Fethiye-Gocek, Koycegiz-Dalyan, Belek, Patara, and Goksu Delta – Special Environmental Protection Areas (SEPA), official sources told Anadolu Agency on Wednesday.
The project, titled the “Sea Turtle Nesting Areas and Demarcation Project,” will also prohibit people from entering the five SEPAs supervised by the General Directorate of Natural Heritage Conservation.
The project intends to improve the preservation of green sea turtles Caretta Caretta and Chelonia Mydas, who nest on the beaches in these regions.
The wooden barriers will prohibit beach goers from entering the restricted zones. Besides, the use of umbrellas or sun loungers, as well as sand screening, will be prohibited on beaches.
Vehicle entries to the beach areas will also be blocked.
Turkey is one of the most important nesting areas for this endangered species. Every year they come to the shore in early summer and lay eggs.

Underwater museum of Gallipoli battle shipwrecks opens in Turkey
The Gallipoli Historical Underwater Park off the coast of Seddulbahir in Turkey’s Çanakkale province opened on October 2, allowing divers the chance to examine evidence of the fierce World War I battles between Ottoman and Allied forces resting beneath the surface of the Dardanelles.
The Gallipoli Historical Underwater Park opened 106 years after Ottoman and allied German forces halted an invasion by British, French, Australian and New Zealand troops.
Turkish photographer Savaş Karakaş was one of the first to board a motorboat and then dive to the seabed grave when the park opened on Saturday.

Istanbul’s ‘beggar cat’ tricks shoppers to score 10 meals a day
The “beggar cat” that stalks the pet food aisle of a market in Istanbul’s Kadıköy has gained social media fame for his Oscar-worthy “hunger” pains, tricking passersby into thinking he is a starving vagrant – in reality, the store’s manager says the street cat actually eats 10 meals a day thanks to the feline’s clever antics.
The stray, who the store’s employees have nicknamed “Nokta,” or “Dot” in English, maintains a vigilant daily watch of the pet food aisle.
The clever feline waits for sympathetic shoppers and starts woefully meowing as they draw near. To add to the effect, the furry swindler sometimes raises one foot and pretends to be lame or often “faints” to get less interested customers to buy him food.
