One dies as daily boat sinks off Ölüdeniz

A passenger has died after a daily tour boat sank just off Ölüdeniz Belcekiz Beach on Saturday.

2-year-old Yunus Emre Yılmaz, who was injured after the sinking of the tour boat, later died in hospital.

Yılmaz, who is one of two children, came to Fethiye from France with his family for a holiday.

There were 35 passengers and 3 crew on the boat, many of who swam to the safety of the beach.

Fethiye District Governor Eyüp Fırat announced that there was a break in the front of the boat and that the boat sank by taking water after the breakage.

Turkish doctor warns of heat-induced summer ailments

As temperatures continue to soar, a Turkish doctor has warned that the heat can lead to a number of heat-induced ailments, including heatstroke, infections, and insect bites.

In a statement from Bayindir Health Group, Dr. Serpil Kilinc said extended exposure to the sun and environments with high temperatures causes heatstroke where the body fails to balance its temperature through perspiration.

Heatstroke comes with various symptoms such as sweaty cold skin, fatigue, thirst, muscle cramps, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and urine concentration.

“You should not be outside when the heat is intense. Wear glasses and a hat when going out to protect from heat-related diseases,” she said. “Sunscreens with appropriate factors should be used. Thin and light-coloured clothes should be worn and plenty of liquids should be consumed.”

Hatching season starts on Çalış beach

Caretta carettas have also started hatching on Çalış beach located in Turkey’s Mediterranean resort city of Fethiye.

The hatchlings break out of their shells after incubating for approximately 80 days and, dig through the sand to the surface, mostly at night and navigate their way to the sea by the reflection of the moon and starlight on the water’s surface.

DEKAMER officials and volunteers routinely check the nests every nigh in both Çalış and Dalyan.

DEKAMER Public Relations Officer Zerrin Vural said, “We protect the nests of turtles. Our particular request is that people do not leave plastic waste on the beach. Also, as turtles hatch at at night, I ask them not to turn on their lights when they see turtles, to act more quietly if possible and to avoid any movements that will disturb the turtles.

Artificial light often confuses the hatchlings and they lose their way and die.

Turkey reopens Sümela Monastery after 5-year massive restoration

Turkey opened the Sümela Monastery in the Black Sea province of Trabzon to visitors on Thursday after the completion of more than five years of restorations.

Also known as Mother Mary, or Virgin Mary, it is carved out of rocks in a wooded area on the slope of Mt. Karadag in Macka — 300 meters (984 feet) above the Altindere Valley.

The restoration of the majestic monastery complex began in February 2016 and was completed in two phases after landscaping, investigation, and strengthening of the geological and geotechnical maintenance of rocks at a cost of around 57 million Turkish liras.

Sümela Monastery, which is included in UNESCO’s temporary list of World Heritage sites, was reopened for religious practice on Aug. 15, 2010, with permission from the Culture and Tourism Ministry, following an 88-year hiatus.

The monastery, which is one of the country’s most important religious tourism centres, was closed in 2015 due to the risk of falling rocks from nearby Mt. Karadag.

It was partly reopened to visitors in May 2019 after more than three years of restoration efforts.
