Guy Fawkes night raises funds for AFOT

Charity News & Events – week ending 17 November 2019

AFOT, Animal Friends of Turkey, enjoyed a brilliant Guy Fawkes themed night out at Park Alya Restaurant in Üzümlü. The night was arranged by Denise Atkins and hosted by Keith Edwards and Dave Roue. A delicious Chinese meal was followed by some fun and games and a ceremonial burning of an effigy of Guy Fawkes and, of course, sparklers.

The night raised a total of 3000tl from a Raffle, Blind Auction and an open Auction. A generous cash donation from Ertan Çetinkaya, owner of Park Alya, was very gratefully received.

The guests were kept busy with a Guy Fawkes themed quiz and picture round, the winners of which, Pussay Patrol, won a Chinese meal for two, very kindly donated by Ertan. A round of Chinese whispers produced much hilarity and has possibly started off another rumour in the village!! (totally untrue of course!) A Chinese Fortune Jar also raised a few lira.

Mike Cato, One of the AFOT committee members, gave thanks to all concerned in the fundraising and also provided some information about the charities work and some statistics about how many animals they have helped over the last 12-14 months or so.

AFOT is a registered UK Charity and also raises funds in Turkey under the umbrellla of AA Ovacik Hayvan Dostlari Yardim, a legally registered charity in Turkey. The aim of AFOT is to help street animals in Turkey and if a home cannot be found locally, then to rehome them in the UK. Funds are needed to help with the costs associated to fostering and healthcare whilst awaiting transport to their new forever homes in the UK.

A spokesperson for the Üzümlü Adoption Group has expressed thanks to AFOT for the help they have been given to re-home a number of Üzümlü puppies.

Organiser, Denise Atkins, thanks all those involved in making it special night but in particular, Ertan Cetinkaya and his staff together with Keith Edwards and Dave Roue for their auctioning skills.

But of course the evening would not have been the success it was without the guests who entered into spirit of the evening.

Generous friends support 3C’s

Thank you to Cathy Harrower for the update and photograph.

A group of friends who meet weekly to play darts in Hisarönü, like to offer support to disadvantaged local children via Çalış Children’s Charity (3C’s), and all donate regularly for this purpose.

Previously, the friends have collected money which was donated to the 3C’s to fund cochlear implants for a young girl.

Now, once again, their generosity has raised more funds for the 3C’s, which will be used to help the family of a young local girl who is undergoing chemotherapy in Antalya, following surgery for cancer. In order for this to happen, the family must spend extended periods of time in Antalya, so have had to rent accommodation there.

Two of the friends visited the 3C’s shop on Bariş Manco Bulvarı on 7th November to hand over their donation.  Çalış Children’s Charity are very grateful for their generosity once again.

3C’s raise money to support local children with medical needs and also poorer schools who are in need of teaching aids or equipment. We also fund bursaries for young people who attend university, to assist with their studying costs.

We raise money in various ways; we sell items donated to us in our shop and organise a number of annual events, including Spring and Autumn craft fairs, the very popular Çalış Christmas fair, and hold Coffee Mornings / Fashion shows. If anyone would like to support us by volunteering in the shop or helping at our events, please contact us via our Facebook  page or call into the shop which is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 11.00 and 2.00 pm.
