A total of 102 beaches and seven marinas in Muğla have received the prestigious Blue Flag award for 2019, reflecting their excellence in water quality, information provision, environmental education, safety and environmental management. 

The awards were presented at a ceremony at the Ece Saray Marina, an award winner, on Friday afternoon.

The ceremony organised by TÜRÇEV (Turkey Environment Education Foundation) was attended by the Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Muğla Governor Esengül Civelek, Muğla Deputy Yelda Erol Gökcan, Muğla Metropolitan Mayor Osman Gürün, 18th and 22nd CHP Gaziantep deputy and former tourism minister Abulkadir Ateş, Fethiye Mayor, Alim Karaca and Fethiye Governor, Muzaffer Şahiner.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ersoy said, “We rank third in the number of blue flags in the world. We are proud of our achievement and our goal is for Turkey to take first place so we still have work to do.”

TÜRÇEV Chairman Rıza Tevfik Epikmen stated that the Blue Flag is the biggest and most important eco label in the world and is applied in 55 countries. He said: “We represent Turkey and carry out Blue Flag audits.”

Muğla Mayor Osman Gurun “The number of award winning, safe beaches in Turkey is very important in terms of marketing. Muğla currently ranks second in Turkey and we want to be first in the coming years.”

After the award ceremony, children from Eco-Schools gave a presentation from the point of view of marine life and the impact pollution has on them.

After the ceremony all that was left to do was run the Ece Saray Marina Blue Flag up the flagpole.

A total of 463 beaches, 22 marinas and 15 yachts in Turkey won a 2019 Blue Flag award.

Muğla was second with 102 beaches in Bodrum, 60 in Marmaris, nine in Fethiye, eight in Datça, eight in Ortaca, three in Milas and one beach in Ula.
