New zero euro banknote features Göbeklitepe

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 18 May 2019

Göbeklitepe, one of the oldest sites of archaeological ruins and one of the oldest temples in the world, located in Turkey’s southeastern Şanlıurfa province, is featured on a new Zero Euro banknote which is licensed by the European Central Bank and printed for commemorative purposes and used for tourism.

Göbeklitepe is considered to be the birthplace of human civilizations, and this year, the government has declared 2019 as the “Year of Göbeklitepe.”

The banknotes are printed at a private fiduciary facility and they share many of the same characteristics of a real Euro except that they are marked as “0”, hence the name, and are tested to ensure they cannot enter circulation as legitimate financial currency. The front of all zero euros is the same and it includes a white zero followed by the Euro sign to denominate no financial value.

The special series of bills has been printed to mark the 100th anniversary of May 19, 1919, the day Mustafa Kemal, later to become Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, arrived in the Black Sea province of Samsun from Istanbul to organize the War of Independence that saw the remnants of the Ottoman Empire transformed into modern Turkey four years later.

The banknotes are popular with collectors and a total of 10,000 bills have been sold.

One killed and one injured as retaining wall collapses onto car in Istanbul’s Başakşehir

One person was killed and another injured after a retaining wall collapsed onto a car in Istanbul’s Başakşehir district on Tuesday.

The wall separating a housing development complex and a street in Kayaşehir neighborhood collapsed suddenly during the early evening, prompting a search and rescue effort for the two people trapped inside a car under tons of soil and rubble.

Firefighter and Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) crews rescued the injured passenger later in the evening, and recovered the body of the deceased, identified as Fatih Göztepe, from under the rubble.

Following the incident, locals told reporters at the scene that they had alerted officials to cracks in the wall but no measures were taken.

There are no construction sites in the area or heavy rains that could have prompted a landslide and collapse, as seen in similar incidents over the past couple of months.

The Environment and Urbanism Ministry have launched an investigation into the incident.
