24 killed in road accident in Marmaris.

24 passengers on a bus were killed and ten others injured in a traffic accident on Saturday.

The bus was heading to Marmaris from the Buca district of İzmir for a one-day trip when the driver, Armağan Satmış, lost control of the vehicle in the Sakageçidi region. The bus tumbled down a cliff and ambulances, fire department and teams from Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) were dispatched to the scene.

Speaking about the accident, Muğla Governor Amir Çiçek said that the bus was carrying local tourists.

“There were no foreign tourists on the bus. The reason for the accident is being investigated. According to the initial findings, the brakes malfunctioned, but the accident is being investigated,” Çiçek said.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has released a statement on the accident, saying that he passes his condolences to the relatives of those killed, while wishing speedy recovery to those injured.

The passengers were heading to Marmaris to particiate in an event to mark Mothers’ Day.

Göcek Tunnel toll increased

The toll at the Göcek Tunnel has recently increased from 4.50 TL to 5 TL for cars and smaller vehicles.

The tunnel will celebrate its eleventh birthday this year. It was opened on 25 July 2006 in an official ceremony by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The single carriageway tunnel, which takes only a few minutes to drive through, provided an alternative to the lengthy mountain pass road.

When the tunnel was opened the toll charge for cars and smaller vehicles was 2.50 TL.

Four year old boy killed near Köyceğiz

A four year old boy was killed when his father’s car reversed over him on Friday. Feridun Kılınç accidentally reversed over 4 year old Cemre, who was sitting on the road outside the house near Köyceğiz. Father Feridun Kılınç rushed the child to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The gendarmerie continues to investigate the case.

Gendarmerie carry out traffic safety training in schools during Highway Traffic Week

In order to increase traffic awareness and knowledge of traffic rules, Fethiye District Gendarmerie Command and Ölüdeniz Middle School carried out a painting and poetry contest entitled “Respecting Traffic with Traffic Safety Education”. Students who participated in the contest received an award and had the opportunity to read out their poems during the award ceremony.

Gendarmerie Senior Sergeant, Mehmet Şen, said that 98 percent of the traffic accidents in Turkey are caused by human error and explained the importance of obeying traffic rules, being careful on the roads and adhering to traffic lights and signs. He also talked about using safety belts at all times. At the end of the training, students were given educational brochures on traffic rules prepared by the gendarmerie.

Gendarmerie Senior Sergeant Mehmet Şen also said that they would continue their efforts to raise awareness in the community through training being given to citizens and students during Highway Traffic Week (7-15 May)
