The forest fires around Göcek earlier this month have inspired a fund-raising event to be held in Üzümlü on Thursday evening.

Some of the money raised at the family Hoe Down at Park Alya Restaurant will go towards initiatives in support of emergency services involved in fighting the blaze which destroyed hundreds of hectares of woodland.

Environmentalists in action

The event has been organised under the umbrella of the Üzümlü Environment Protection Group, whose members were involved in the evacuation of the animals from the threatened shelter.

The group was originally formed to fight plans for development in the Üzümlü area, including the recent application to extend a local quarry and construct an asphalt plant and concrete factory nearby.

However, spokesman David Roue said members felt the group should also offer wider help and assistance when possible.

“The forest fire brought home to many people just how fragile our environment is and how quickly it can be destroyed,” he said.

“If not for the brave emergency services who managed to contain the fire, it could have been far more devastating.”

Dinner and dancing

Thursday’s event includes dinner and dancing on a country and western theme.

The will be a fund-raising raffle, while Keith Edwards will DJ at a disco later in the evening.

Tickets for the evening can be purchased at the Park Alya Restaurant or via Dave Roue himself at 70.00tl per person with discounts available for children.

The programme begins at 7pm.
