A Day to Night to Day adventure with something for everyone!
It is time, once again, to observe the annual celestial firework display produced by the Perseid Meteor Shower. There is an exciting bonus this year though as the Delta Aquarid meteor shower is concurrent with the Perseids. We probably won’t be able to distinguish which meteor comes from what shower – it just means there’s more to admire! So Fethiye Times Travel Club, in partnership with Volkan’s Adventures has put together an Exclusive Experience not on offer from anywhere else.
So what are we doing…?
Our Celestial Adventure will start off in broad daylight with pickups being made throughout Fethiye in mid-afternoon before we travel on to Dalyan. Our first stop will be at Sülüngür Lake where we have an opportunity to stretch our legs, have a refreshing drink at the Gölbaşı Restaurant and of course – use the loo in preparation for the beautiful and scenic drive to Radar Mountain. For those of you who think you know Dalyan – think again. Anyone who has ever taken this 45 minute drive up the mountain will tell you that the views you will encounter are simply breath taking! And we all know that being in the capable hands of an experienced driver leaves us free to drink it all in.
When we get to the top, cameras will be the first order of the day because from this elevated vantage point you will be able to see views of the entire Dalyan Delta taking in Iztuzu Beach, Sülüngür Lake and Köyceğiz Lake. As the day is wearing on we will enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and good company before setting off for a Supper with a Difference at the Sunset Restaurant.
The clue may be in the name but it is from here we will watch the sunset as a pre-requisite to the evening ahead. The Perseids start flying in mid to late evening. Occasionally, a meteor will hit the atmosphere at a very shallow angle. Called an earthgrazer, these are long, slow meteors that fly horizontally across the sky. They usually appear before midnight when the radiant point is closer to the horizon. So while we are waiting, we will enjoy a lovely meal at this local family run restaurant with Georgian origins. The mouth-watering Georgian Pie is a cheesy delight that this restaurant is famous for and, although the menu is small, it is perfectly formed and everything served including the Georgian Salad, Sea Bream, Chicken and Pepper Kebabs have a regional influence that is not common to the area.
After dinner, when darkness has enveloped the skies, we will head to our boat which will sail into the serene darkness of Koycegiz Lake. We need about 20 minutes for our eyes to adjust to the darkness and Volkan assures us that his crew will be at your service with a well-stocked bar and plenty of wine or soft drinks for those who want them.
This year, the moon will be at approximately quarter-phase, so the light from the moon will interfere with the shower. The Perseids tend to be quite bright meteors though and so a good percentage should overcome the moonlight. Look for the distinctive “W” of Cassiopeia in the North-east and the radiant point is nearby. However, with good fortune, meteors will be appearing from all over the sky so don’t worry if you can’t identify the actual radiant point. If we’re lucky, it’ll be like a celestial Piccadilly Circus, but remember, the Perseids are a natural phenomenon and the quantity, brightness, frequency and direction cannot be guaranteed.
And there is more….
We will, of course, arrive back quite late so we have arranged a simple but lovely hotel overnight stay before we head back to Fethiye the next day. Early risers can take advantage of a wander around downtown Dalyan but we aim to leave our hotel by 10.00am. After a refreshing wake up tea or coffee or two at the hotel our transport will take us to the most delightful breakfast stop in a forest glade near Göcek. Peaceful and green with a natural creek running by with nature on our doorstep a super spread of Serpme Kahvaltı will be yours to enjoy at your leisure among the liquid amber trees.
Finally we head back to Sunny Fethiye – those who are based in Dalyan will be dropped off in Fethiye to enjoy the delights of the town while those who need to get back home will be delivered safe and sound. Finally, our Dalyan friends will be picked up at an agreed time and location to head back to Dalyan. And then we just have to wait until next year…
