Mayor Opens New Park In Fethiye Specially Designed for the Disabled

The Mayor opened a new park in Patlangıç this week specially designed for use by the handicapped. The idea behind the park came from Mustafa Boztaş, a local man who found himself confined to a wheelchair after a traffic accident four years ago.

Now Boztaş’ dream is reality and the 2,428sq.m. park is open to all.

Big Name Football Team Came to Town

The big news of the week was Beşiktaş football team coming to Fethiye.

They came to train and enjoy the clement weather ahead of a crucial match, and arrived in their state of the art black and white coach (only from Dalaman airport) on Thursday, to begin their four-day stay.

They were treated by the Mayor at a special dinner, followed by the local press as they jogged around the Bay and, on Saturday, did circuit training in the football stadium with a full house watching, and around 3000 further spectators on neighbouring balconies and roofs.

We hope the visit prepared them for the meeting with Mersin on 1st April – we’ll let you know what happened next week.

Remember the 156 Number

On 3 March a group of twelve walkers, 11 Turks and 1 German, found themselves lost in the mountains near Fethiye with night approaching.

They called 156 for the Jandarma, and the latter rescued them in double quick time.

This week the members of the Jandarma actually involved in that rescue, were given commendation certificates by the Governor of Fethiye to congratulate them on their work.

The Jandarma Commander told press

“Luckily the lost walkers had the presence of mind to dial 156, and we were happy to avert a tragedy. People should always remember the 156 number.”

Sad Loss For Music Lovers

Readers may recall the wonderful evening in the antique theatre last year, when Zülfü Livaneli’s life story was told by local schoolchildren, and then the man himself was given the keys of Fethiye.

As we told you at the time, he had lived here for a few years as a child, when his father was the Chief Prosecutor for the town.

Well this week Livaneli senior passed away in Ankara at the grand old age of 95.
