Fethiye could be a new destination for mega cruise liners if a feasibility study currently underway makes the case.

The feasibility study, funded by the South Aegean Development Agency, is looking into the fine detail of building and operating the multi-million dollar infrastructure project.

It will include crunching the tourism numbers to see if the investment will stack up financially, the technical feasibility of building and operating the port and jetty, financing options, marketing and finally expert opinions.

The report is due to be finalised in mid May and will made available to the public.

Currently many of the largest mega cruise liners either avoid Fethiye because of the lack of a suitable jetty or, as pictured above, they must anchor in the bay and transfer passengers into Fethiye by tender.

The consruction of a new jetty could see Fethiye attract the lucrative cruise liner trade so enjoyed by neighbouring Rhodes, Marmaris and furtehr afield Bodrum harbour.

Currently Fethiye can only welcome liners with a shallow draft. For example the lsmall and exclusive liner Seabourne Spirit with a draft of only 5.2 meters is able to dock along side the shallow jetty in Fethiye.
