Murder Case – Court Hears from the Accused
The trial of the man who is alleged to have murdered 56 year old British woman Caterina Anna Bury and injured her 24 year old son and 87 year old grandmother with a shotgun at their home in Dalyan on 9th September 2013 took place at the Fethiye criminal courts.
Local reporters sat in the court room and reported on the examination of defendant Veli Acar who claims to be the ex-lover of Anna and the caretaker for the family.
The press reported the whole hearing.
Caternia Bury had been celebrating her 56th birthday with her family at their villa in Dalayan on 9th September when it is alledged her ex lover and caretaker Veli Acar arrived at the house with a shotgun.
An argument broke out and son Alex was shot in the hand and foot by the the 47 year old.
Caterina and son fled to a bathroom in their villa but Ali followed them and when he could not get into the bathroom because the door had been locked he shot the door down. Caterina received a fatal wound from the shot and died.
Ali explained that the two met 6 years ago when he was working as a boat captain. He then struck up a relationship with the 56 year old oil industry risk manager from Swainby, North Yorkshire.
He said Caterina bought a plot of land in Dalyan in 2011 and he helped to build 2 villas on the plot. He then took up a paid role as a gardener and cleaner of the villas.
He said they lived the life like that of a husband and wife for 5 years until Caterina broke off the relationship.
He said he had seen pictures of Caterina on Facebook with an Arabic man and they had upset him.
He had gone around to the house to talk with Caterina but had been humiliated when the son ‘kicked him out’.
When he arrived at the house on the day of the birthday party with a shotgun he said his intention was to commit suicide in front of them and not to kill and injure them.
He finished by saying he loved Caterina and has a picture of her by his prison bed.
The case is now adjourned and will resume on 20th March 2014.
Extra Help Called for House Fire
A house in the village Esenköy outside Fethiye was gutted by fire on Saturday night.
It was reported that the owner managed to escape and the fire service managed to put the fire out but only after backup crews from Karachula and Oludeniz attended.
It took two hours to quell the flames.
A man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding was run over by a truck as it turned right at traffic lights on the junction of Oludeniz Caddesi and Süleyman Demirel Boulevard on Saturday.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Fethiyespor drew nil-nil at home with Samsunspor last week.
The team remain 16th in the league and in the relegation zone.

It was a tough week for the Lira last week but the intervention of the central bank and the increase in interest rates reversed the decline. The Turkish currency ended the week at 3.72 TL to the British Pound. The week earlier it ended at 3.86 TL.
Tomatoes hit the headlines last week as the wholesale prices fell.
The head of the growers cooperative said green house tomatoes were fetching between 40 and 80 Kurus a kilo.
Over supply is being blamed for the softening of prices; too many greenhouses growing tomatoes and too few buyers to keep prices higher.
