Our weekly round up of the local news and events from Fethiye, Oludeniz, Hisaronu, Kayakoy and area includes murder trial begins, the Calis bird sanctuary gets a spruce up, love is in the air for the Fethiyespor shop, Fethiye as a cruise destination one step closer and more.
Murder Case Begins
The trial of the man who is alleged to have murdered 56 year old British woman Caterina Anna Bury at her home in Dalyan on 9th September 2013 began last Friday 24th January 2014 at the Fethiye criminal courts.
Bird Sanctuary Spruce Up
A crack team of 25 cleaners swooped into the Calis Bird Sanctuary last week.
The team from Fethiye Council spent almost all day on the site filling black bag upon bag with discarded bottles, paper and other assorted rubbish that was strewn over the area.
The team manager was quoted in the press as saying he had never seen so many discarded alcohol bottles in one area.
But putting the ‘drink problems for birds’ aside now the birds will now have a much cleaner place in which to tweet.
Fethiyespor Shop Ready for Valentines Day
The team shop located on the Fethiye promenade is getting ready to woo romantic fans into its store over the next few weeks.
The team, who recently beat football giants Fenerbache, have extended the range of clothing available and are also offering some other football products for sale.
One such product is a picture of the team lined up with letters on each shirt spelling out the phrase “Great Atatürk”.
That stunt has got them into hot water with football league bosses though because it is politicising the great game and a hearing into the incident is now on the cards.
However, the team seem undeterred and are displaying the picture in their store.
So if you want to give a loved one something special this Valentines Day make sure you pop into the Fethiyespor shop.
Around 80 hunters took part in a two day operation to cull wild boar around the village of Ovacik, Oludeniz.
It was reported that damage to crops caused by the pigs and also the threat to public safety from the large animals feeding from refuse bins required decisive action.
The village headman gave permission for a cull to take as a pest control operation.
The local press said that 10 boars were culled in total.
New Cruise Jetty One Step Closer
The possibility of Fethiye becoming a new cruise destination took a step closer last week when it was announced that the Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FTSO) have won some cash to develop their ideas further.
They have received 66,000TL to help turn their ideas to build a new jetty that would enable large cruise ships to berth alongside in Fethiye into a proper investment plan.
Marmaris up the coast benefits from a deep water jetty that allows some of the largest liners to berth alongside. This brings thousands of tourists and thousands of Lira to the resort every year.
Currently the largest liners must anchor off in Fethiye Bay due to lack of water by the jetties and therefore tourists need to be transferred by smaller boats. That transfer deters large cruisers from visiting.
Fethiyespor drew 1 all away to Balıkesirspor last week.
Despite this latest victory and clawing their way to 16th in the league they could still be battling relegation.
• 26/01/2014 – Fethiyespor – Samsunspor
• 02/02/2014 – Bucaspor – Fethiyespor
• 09/02 Fethiyespor – Ankaraspor
FethiyeSpor are now 16th out of the 19 teams in the PTT1 League with 18 points after 20 matches.
The score sheet for the 20 games played to date is 4 wins, 6 draws and 10 lost.
Another record week for the Turkish Lira that ended the week at a record low of 3.86 TL to the British Pound. Last week it was 3.66 TL.
Just how low can the Lira sink and is 4 TL on the cards we wonder?
FIG 10 Years Old

On Tuesday they will be holding a craft fair next to the Address Bar on the kordon between 11am and 4pm.

Pussy’s In the Well
Do you remember last weeks news snippets feature two animal rescues?
One was of a stranded kitten by the Fethiye Fire Service and the other of two goats stuck up near the rock tombs in Fethiye rescued by mountain rescue team ACUTE.
Well there was yet another rescue of a stranded cat in the county last week. The AKUT team were called to Bodrum to rescue a cat stuck in a well.
The team performed brilliantly as usual and rescued the feline without drama.
But who pulled out the cat? Was it little Tommy Stout?
We wonder if the English nursery rhyme of “Ding dong bell pussy’s in the well” works in Turkish?
