Goodbye 2013, hello 2014. In this weeks round up of the local news from Fethiye, Oludeniz, Hisaronu, Kayakoy and area includes rustlers apprehended, fire service working hard, green bins for Fethiye and more.

Fire Service Working Hard

As 2013 drew to a close the public services began publishing their statistics for the year.

Fethiye Municipality Fire service reported they had attended 150 incidents in the year.

They broke down as 36 in residential property, 4 work places, 22 vehicle fires, 48 traffic accidents and 21 forest fires.

And what of the remaining 19 miscellaneous incidents? Well one of those we reported on back in the summer when the Fire Service was called out to remove a snake from a filling station forecourt!

Green Bins Could Become a Feature of Fethiye

When Fethiye Mayor Behçet Saatchi was pictured in the local press last week standing next to a green bin it wasn’t because it was a slow news week.

It was actually to launch a new pilot study to camouflage the ugly metal bins we see around town.

A total of 20 of bins that are covered with a type of astro turf will be located around town.

If the pilot is successful – the bins survive the rough and tumble life they have – the bins ‘style’ may be expanded and rolled out to other areas such as Gocek, Karachula and Uzumlu.

Who Got Your Goat?

Two men who allegedly stole two goats from a road side near Esen were arrested and appeared in court last week.

Luckily the vehicle that was used to whisk the small ruminants away was spotted and the number plate noted.

The two were arrested after the security services tracked down the car.

The animals were taken into care and later returned to their rightful owner, no doubt none the wiser as to what had happened.

Cyclist Dies

A truck collided with an 83 year old Turkish man who was riding his bike on the road between Fethiye and Seydikemer.

The man was taken to hospital, but it was reported, he later died.

It was a 1-1 draw in the Fethiyespor – Gaziantep match held on 28 December 2013.

Future fixtures

• 12/01/2014 – Fethiyespor – 1461 Trabzon

The Turkish Lira ended the week at 3.58TL to the British Pound. Last week it was 3.55 TL.

And Finally

New Year Splash

The 3c’s annual New Year splash featured in the local press last week.

They reported the reason for the event and included quotes from some of those that took part. Was the sea cold? Yes they replied!
