FethiyeSpor Giant Killers

Istanbul / Fethiye

Fethiyespor supporters went mad last Wednesday night when their team beat the Istanbul premier league team 2-1 in a Ziraat Cup match.

Fethieyans celebrated in style with a procession of cars, scooters and pedestrians circling the town centre in a loud and proud triumph.

The victory was even more of a shock for many as the local team, who were promoted last season, have been unable to break free from the bottom of the PTT 1 League.

The story dominated the press all week and they continued to run articles about the victory until Saturday.

But the team remain at the bottom of the league after 14 matches with just 6 points. So they will need to work their new found magic over the next few weeks to beat relegation.

Their next matches are as follows:

08/12 Denizlispor – Fethiyespor

15/12 Fethiyespor – Adana Demirspor –

22/12 Boluspor – Fethiyespor

Patrick Etoga and Ufuk Bayraktar will be unable to play in Sunday’s match against Denizlispor due to injury.

Karachula Mayor Released from Prison

Court Building Arkaca Mah, Fethiye

The Mayor of Karachula Yusuf Cayli who was involved in a collision on the Yayla road on 26 October 2013 that resulted in the death of husband and wife pedestrians was released from prison last Tuesday.

The elderly couple had been crossing the main road in the dark when the Mayor who was driving his official car struck both of them. He claimed he was not speeding and had been dazzled by oncoming vehicle lights.

A hearing of the high court in Fethiye found Yusuf not guilty of causing the deaths by dangerous driving.

He left the court to be greeted by his supporters.

Oludeniz Mayor No 1

Hisaronu, Fethiye

The Mayor of Oludeniz and CHP Fethiye Mayor candidate Keramettin Yilmaz won the Mayor of the Year award last week.

He beat 1,500 other contestants to win the coveted prize that was awarded to him in Ankara.

His supporters including other CHP mayors met him on the outskirts of Fethiye and an entourage complete with drummer, musicians and flower bearers escorted him back to Hisaronu in a mini triumph.

All eyes are now on 30 March 2014 when the battle for the Mayor of the extended unitary authority of Fethiye and other areas in Mugla will take place.

Silent Bikes Pose Problem for Partially Sighted

Central Fethiye

They may be green, they may be cheap to run and not require a license but the local press found something to complain about with electric bikes this week; their quietness.

They interviewed a local man who is partially sighted. The man complained that riders of the bikes do not take account that not everyone has good eyesight and that he relies on sound to determine when he should cross the road.

He said that he has had a number of close shaves and that riders should take more care and allow for pedestrians.

Alti Nokta, the local charity and support group for the partially sighted and blind, were also interviewed and said that drivers need to take more care and understand that not everybody is able to see oncoming traffic.

The Turkish Lira ended the week unchanged from the previous week at 3.31 TL to the British Pound. A Turkish Lira is now equivalent to 30 pence.

And Finally

Winter Weather Hits Turkey

It was a week when winter weather arrived in Turkey. Snow fell in the east and ice covered roads and paths as temperatures his minus figures.

Meanwhile in the warmer west rain fell. In Fethiye the heavy rain caused some localised flooding and the press featured pictures of flooded ground floor apartments and work places.
