Torrential Rain Misses Fethiye But Marmaris Bears the Brunt

It was a very wet end to the week for some in south west Turkey and the nearby Greek islands as storms passed over the area.

The rain started on Friday morning and continued throughout the day.

Marmaris was hit by a torrential downpour that created such a volume of water that roads and businesses flooded and had to close for a time. Lightening knocked out power supplies for some time and strong gusts of wind whipped up the sea.

The main road towards Mugla was also affected with mini rock falls caused by the flow of rain water off the hills.

The press also showed pictures of hail stones the size of ‘walnuts’ that pelted the area.

The press reported that over 218 kg of rain fell in the 24 hours.

Scrub and Brush Up

Fethiye and Area

Over 6,000 kids will receive a brush up on dental health care as part of an annual dental education programme via Fethiye schools.

Toothbrushes and toothpaste will be given out to students and they will be taught all about oral hygiene and that cleaning their teeth between meals is good in the coming weeks.

The programme will cover over 30 schools in Fethiye and its 23 surrounding villages.

Dalaman Airport in the Spotlight

And now on to a subject very close to many of our hearts, Dalaman Airport.

Members of the Fethiye Chamber of Commerce were reported to have met with the regional director of airports last week to raise a number of concerns and observations about the shortcomings of the ‘gateway’ to our area.

At the meeting they raised a number of questions and complaints about the airport including:

No covered area to meet arriving passengers and being moved on by security staff if waiting by the exit doors;

– The high cost of vehicle parking;

– No 15 minute free parking for pick up as at Antalya airport;

– Taxi fares cost almost as much as an air fare

– Taxi drivers demanding documents if they suspect drivers are illegal transfer operators;

– Extortionate airport food and drink prices. They quoted a small water costs 5TL

– Road safety and speeding in the car park needs to be enforced.

The director is reported to have welcomed their questions and said his staff will investigate them and respond.

He also stated that the airport management contract is in the process of being tendered.

A match between Fethiyespor and TKİ Tavşanlı Linyitspor on Sunday 24th November 2013 was a 2-2 draw.

The Turkish Lira ended the week down 1 kurus from the previous week at 3.25 TL to the British Pound.

Suspected Frog Poachers Caught

Lake Girdev, Fethiye

And Finally.

A midnight operation at Lake Girdev high in the mountains above Fethiye netted five people suspected of poaching protected frogs.

The operation included Jandarma and officials from the Nature Conservation and National Parks Authority.

The five suspects were found to have 11 frogs in their possession.

The frogs were later released but not the suspects who could face heavy fines.

The maximum penalty for poaching the protected frogs is 33,863 TL.

The suspects await trial.
