In this weeks round up of the local news from Fethiye, Oludeniz, Hisaronu, Kayakoy and area includes resignations continue in support of Fethiye Mayor, Fethiye celebrates 90th anniversary of the Turkish Republic, Fethiyespor football manager resigns and more.
Resignations Continue in Support for Fethiye Mayor
The Mayor of Fethiye Behçet Saatcı resigned from his political party, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), on 9th October following a controversial Festival of the Sacrifice message that mixed the Turkish and Kurdish language to make a nationalist statement.
The Mayor tendered his resignation in a speech on 22nd October in the chamber of the municipal offices in downtown Fethiye.
Twelve members of the municipality also resigned from the party in protest at the proposed MHP action against the Mayor.
Last week the resignations continued and the local press reported that 65 members of the party had now resigned from the local branch of the MHP party.
Fethiye Celebrates 90th Anniversary of the Republic
Large crowds turned out to take part in a torchlight procession on 29th October to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey.
The crowd that held Turkish flags and torches were led by the Fethiye marching band. The procession ended in front of the Atatürk Memorial.
Later local musicians performed to crowds in Beşkaza Square.
Republic Day Celebrations Interrupted
Earlier that day hundreds gathered in the FethiyeSpor football stadium to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Turkish Republic.
School children performed folk dances and read poems for the crowd whilst carnival type floats circulated around the football pitch with music and song booming over the PA system.
However, one of the floats that was decorated like a ferry boat complete with crew standing to attention, started to get into difficulties when smoke started to appear, and not from its funnel.
The crew realising something was wrong when the smoke turned to flames soon abandoned ship.
A quick thinking official saved the day when he ran to the stricken float with a fire extinguisher and blasted the flames with CO2. No one was injured.
The celebrations continued with competitions for the children and more displays.
FethiyeSpor won their second match of the season against visiting team BayramPasa 2 – 1.
However, the victory came too late for manager Ismail Öztürk who, following pressure from fans and directors last week for the teams poor performance so far this season, quit the role earlier in the week.
The score sheet for the 11 games played to date is – 2 wins, 1 draw and 8 lost.
The Turkish Lira ended the week at 3.19 TL to the British Pound.
The local press reported that the warm weather and bright sunshine last week had attracted tourists to local beaches even though it was now early November.
Next week should be much quieter though as the final flights of the 2013 season leave Dalaman International Airport.
