Our weekly round up of the local news from Fethiye, Oludeniz, Hisaronu and area this week includes bank truck crash spills cash, business getting better according the chambers of commerce and more.

Splash the Cash

There was excitement outside of Köyceğiz this week when a 7.5 ton armoured van carrying money from banks in Fethiye, went off the road and turned over in heavy rain.

The doors burst open and money spilled out.

The driver and two bank employees in the van were slightly injured.

One of the bank workers was five months pregnant, but the baby was pronounced fine on arrival at hospital.

Jandarma were quickly on the scene, and collected all the money for transfer to another van.

End of excitement.

Business Getting Better

Yet more statistics! The head of Chambers of Commerce in Muğla, held a press conference to announce figures for opening and closing of new businesses in the province.

Last year in Fethiye 730 new businesses opened their doors, while 400 closed down.

He told press that overall tourism was clearly benefiting the province, as the number of new start-ups far outweighed the closures.

Since 2008 a total of 15,303 new businesses had opened across the province, with 10,209 closing down.

Given that we see little, if any, evidence of business planning taking place, the figures are definitely looking good.

Get Down and Get Wiv It

If you thought you heard Turkish rock music on the town’s public address system on Friday, you weren’t dreaming.

The Mayor is a big fan of Cem Karaca, a famous Turkish singer who died in 2004.

So each year on the anniversary of his death, his music is played through the speaker system and this year, for the first time, the Council’s digital display boards also showed remembrance messages.

Next 8 February 2014 will be the 10th anniversary, so we can no doubt expect an extra special celebration.
