This weeks round up of the local news from Fethiye, Oludeniz, Hisaronu and area includes opposition to proposed Fethiye shopping centre, smashing pumpkin grown in Kayakoy and more in our round up of the local news.
Opposition to Proposed Fethiye Shopping Centre
A press conference this week took place at the local Chamber of Trade and Industry, where members are opposed to the creation of a shopping centre in downtown Fethiye.
Whilst no location was named, it would seem they refer to the planned construction of a ‘Shopping, Leisure and Lifestyle Centre’ (official title), on the site of the now defunct wholesale fruit and vegetable market, next to the bus station.
The Chamber is very concerned for the livelihood of the many small shopkeepers amongst its membership, and fears the proposed shopping mall will drive even more of them out of business.
They told press they have been campaigning for the site to be used for something else, and any mall developments to take place out of town, since 2009.
As there has been no progress with the shopping mall build, perhaps the powers that be may be listening for once?
Abandoned Rabbits Rescued By Emergency Services
Two female university students living in Taşyaka went home for the summer vacation in June, but left behind two pet rabbits living on the apartment balcony.
Neighbours struggled throughout the long, hot summer to throw melon rind and salad greens on to the balcony to feed the rabbits, and tried to fill their water bowl with the jet from a hosepipe.
This week they decided enough was enough and phoned the Council who sent firemen round.
The firefighters quickly used their ladder to get up to the balcony, picked up the rabbits and delivered them to the Animal Welfare Sanctuary.
Local press did not say what will happen when/if the students return for the new term.
Muzaffer Yazıcı who lives in Kayaköy has grown a huge pumpkin that weighed in at 174kg this week.
It took four men with a blanket to lift the monster on to the scales.
Pity there’s still a way to go to Hallowe’en as it would make an amazing lantern!
Slip Sliding Away
Ölüdeniz Belediye announced this week that it will hold its second annual greased wrestling contest on Sunday 14th October.
So keep your eyes peeled for the inevitable banner that will appear over the road in Ovacık with details of the time and place.
