This weeks round up of the local news from Fethiye, Oludeniz, Hisaronu and area includes drivers end up in canal, rescue for stranded walkers and mile high proposal in our round up of the local news.

Fethiye Drivers Affinity to Water

A young couple from Izmir drove out from the road alongside the bus station, driver turned too quickly, lost control, bounced off another car and then went into the canal.

No-one was injured, and the couple sent the ambulance called by police back to the hospital empty.

It took three hours to winch the car up from the water.

A few hours later another car went into the same canal nearer to the town centre.

This time the driver was drunk and left in an ambulance with a police escort.

Tragic Death

Another tragedy occurred this week when 50-year-old Fikret Yıldırım decided to cool off by going for a swim off Koca Çalış beach.

People on the beach noticed he seemed to be struggling to stay afloat, they went into the sea, brought him ashore and called the ambulance.

But it was too late, and despite the paramedics’ efforts to resuscitate him, he was declared dead at the scene.

Rescue Team In Another Butterfly Valley Rescue

This week yet again AKUT rescued a young student couple who got stuck trying to climb down into Butterfly Valley from Faralya.

Apparently they only started their descent at 19.00 and got stuck when it went dark.

The head of AKUT told local press that his group have now rescued six people stuck on the rocks above the Valley this year, and it is time the route was better marked.

Mile High Proposal

And it seems the global trend for unusual marriage proposals finally reached Fethiye at the end of last week.

A young man from Istanbul surprised his girlfriend with flights to Dalaman and a weekend in Ölüdeniz.

On Saturday he told her he had booked them both on tandem paraglide flights.

She did not know that he had already been in touch with the company and arranged for his parachute to have the words “Will you spend your life with me” stuck on to the underside.

The couples took off and the pilots manoeuvred so that the woman could read what was written on her boyfriend’s parachute.

Apparently there were a few awkward moments before the woman said ‘Yes’.

When they landed on the beach he went down on one knee and placed a ring on her finger.

And the local press got lots of photos!
