Chilled Out Saklıkent
The authorities announced this week that in the three months April, May and June almost 100,000 people visited Saklıkent Gorge.
As local press reported ‘seekers of natural air conditioning’.
And the Band Played On
The Council’s band played on the promenade in Çalış this week and, according to local press, ‘tourists left their loungers and gathered round to listen’.
As we have reported previously, the Council is staging open air concerts all summer given by the Marching Band or the newly formed Mehter Band.
Latest news is both groups will shortly be going out of Fethiye to play in surrounding villages.
We’ll let you know if they make it to Yanıklar.
Kayaköy Marriage Opportunities Face Stiff Challenge Due to Lack of Plan
Muhtars from the villages in the Kayaköy valley, called the local press in this week to bemoan the state of affairs with regard to building in their locality.
As Kayaköy is deemed an area of historical interest, building is forbidden.
We all know there are ‘illegal builds’ galore in the valley but, as the muhtars pointed out, owners of those properties, in the main non-Turks, have paid stiff fines whereas locals who own land cannot build, because they can’t afford the fines.
But the real reason for this press conference, was to deplore the fact that young men in Kayaköy are apparently having difficulty in finding brides.
“When we go to see a girl’s family to ask for her hand in marriage, they want us to provide a house for the young couple as is normal, but we can’t build so our young men can’t marry.”
We feel sure they’ll find a way.
Meanwhile the muhtars have written to appropriate Ministries in Ankara urging them to put a development plan in place for the valley as soon as possible.
Council Crack Down on Risky Drivers with Number Plate Recognition Cameras
Fethiye Belediye this week installed another ten security cameras with registration plate recording function, to help catch motorists exceeding speed limits, and going through traffic lights on red.
This brings the total of such cameras to 25 – you have been warned.
