We continue our weekly round up of the local news from Fethiye, Muğla and surrounding area.
Disabled Week Celebrated
Last week was officially ‘Disabled Week’ and simultaneously Turkey’s ‘Social Security Week’ – don’t worry we didn’t realise either until writing this.
The former was celebrated with a party in the ‘Fethiye Rehabilitation & Family Support’ building, at which drum and zurna music accompanied the dancing.
Girls from a local sixth form and members of the Jandarma (in uniform) attended, and apparently everyone enjoyed themselves till late at night.
Local disabled people also took part in a march later in the week to raise awareness.
Mayor Praises National Social Security System
Meanwhile Social Security Week was marked by the Governor and the local Director of Social Security paying a visit to the Mayor.
They gave him a bunch of flowers (gladioli for those interested – and he didn’t wave them) and then all three spoke to local press.
The Mayor praised the national social security umbrella, and said all that remained was to ‘root out illegal workers’.
Then the press followed the Director of Social Security, as she went on to cut a huge cake marking this, the fifth, national Social Security week.
Cake was served to all comers, along with her wishes for a happy and healthy future for all.
Boutique Fethiye Green Fashion
One local vocational girls college held a fashion show with all garments made by the students on their courses.
They included clothing made from recycled materials, and the students who modelled the garments later told press “We really enjoyed doing this. We want to be professional models” – every young girl in Fethiye’s dream, no doubt.
A local couple who met at the motorbike Enduro championships two years ago, got married this week – and travelled in style on a decorated quad bike.
The ceremony was held in the Registrar’s office downtown, after which the couple led a convoy of bikers to the reception in Ölüdeniz.
Red quad bike decorated with white net rosettes, driven by groom with bride in white, riding pillion – nice one.
Blue Flag Designated Beaches Rise to 76
This week the beaches with Blue Flag status within Muğla were announced. Last year they totalled 73 and this year that has risen to 76. Of these 44 are on the Bodrum peninsula, 17 in and around Marmaris and 5 in Fethiye.
Our local ones are four in Ölüdeniz: Lagoon Public Beach, Club Hotel Meri, Noa Beach Club Suncity and Lycia World beach; and one in Fethiye at the Hillside Beach Club.
