The dates of the 5th Çalış Carnival have been announced this week. The colourful celebration of Çaliş organised by the Çalış Tourism and Publicity Association, which attracts visitors and tourists from all over the area, will be concentrated into three days this year and will take place from 31 May to 2 June.

The proposed programme is as follows:

Thursday 31 May – in the evening there will be an opening ceremony and a Carnival Cocktail party at the sunset terrace on Çalış promenade where full details of the Carnival programme will be announced. This will be followed by a free music concert in front of the Sunset terrace.

Friday 1 June – throughout the day there will be competitions on the beach, a beach football tournament and tug of war competition. There will also be oil wrestling and Turkish folklore dancing. In the evening there will be a talk on Çalış of the past, how the resort is developing and the vision for Çalış of the future. There will also be a talk by local wildlife experts on Çalış’s famous Caretta Caretta turtles and wildlife. The evening will again culminate with a free music concert in front of the sunset terrace.

Saturday 2 June – Carnival Day will comprise of an all day exhibition of arts and crafts and information stands by local organisations to be held in the Belediye gardens next to the Mutlu Hotel on Çalış seafront.

The grand Carnival Parade will take place in the afternoon when all of the local schools, organisations and individuals are invited to take part.

The theme of this year’s colourful parade is “The Sea” which gives a wide scope for inventive floats and costumes.

The parade will then be followed by displays of dancing, music and shows by the children on the stage area in the car park next to the Bahar Hotel.

Later in the evening there will be a big free music concert. The name of the headline band will be announced by the organisers shortly.

In addition to the Carnival events planned by the Çalış Association, Çalış Children’s Charity, better known as the 3C’s are planning a number of fundraising events to coincide with the Carnival activities.

On Sunday May 27 they are holding their annual craft fair and street market which is now in its 5th year. This will take place in the main street in Çalış between the Dolphin junction and the water taxi bridge. Stalls will set up along both sides of the road which will be closed to traffic for the day and will be selling a huge range of crafts and handmade goods. The market will be open from 11.00 to 17.00 pm and all net profits from stall fees and the 3C’s charity stall will go to help fund children’s projects in the Çalış/Fethiye area.

On Wednesday 30 May they are planning a “Pirates of the Mediterranean” Boat cruise extravaganza when it is planned that a flotilla of boats will take to the high seas for a day of high jinx and skullduggery!

Finally on Wednesday 7 June they are holding their annual Charity Promises Auction on Çalış seafront. This is the major fundraising event of the charity’s year and a great opportunity to pick up some great bargains whilst helping the children at the same time.
