Sani is a Belgian woman married to a Turk who has been in Turkey for 20 years – and speaks excellent English. She lives in 601 Sokak, a turning off the 22-metre road, and she gives craft classes in her home to small groups of 4 or 5 people.

The day we visited she only had two students but they were busy creating decorative wreaths – in the picture Sani is holding two completed wreaths, the ones she made earlier.

Sani uses mainly recycled materials: old fabrics, cards, paper, buttons, etc., and provides all such materials for her students.

Occasionally she may buy a special item for use in class creations and then students contribute to cover the cost.

The craft room is full of samples of her work including this Valentine tree and a table covered in smaller items which even features a way to recycle wine bottle corks!

Lear 'Cupid' skills

If you’d like to join a class you should know that it costs 15TL per class which lasts 2 – 2.5 hours.

The cost also covers coffee and home-made cakes and, Sani tells us, she sometimes serves freshly made waffles or pancakes.

So if you want to learn how to make handcrafted items phone Sani on 0555 481 4877.

You never know you may end up with a stall of your very own at the next Çalış Craft Fair!

A great excuse to drink wine we think!
