Ölüdeniz Festival 2011 – 1 - 3 July 2011

Turkish music, dance and culture promise to make this one of the best free shows this year and everyone whether, local, resident or on holiday are welcome. Starts 1st July.

Muazzez Ersoy will play this years Oludeniz Festival in Hisaronu Square

Historically the Festival has always been held towards the end of June but this year it has been put back to early July.

In fact the three-day Festival will take place on 1 – 3 July with all the performances listed below happening in Hisarönü Market Place.

There are also some events at the Sanat Evi in Ovacık but, as these are mainly poetry/book readings and signings conducted in Turkish, we haven't listed them. But do take a walk to the Sanat Evi and see for yourselves.

Events which can be enjoyed by all are as follows:

Friday 1st July

7pm Traditional street parade around Hisarönü – get there early and bag a table on a bar balcony overlooking the route.

9pm Local saz supremo Ramazan Kıvrak takes to the stage with a group named 'Yörük Yarenler'.

We think they got the idea for that name from our British friends who perform Turkish folk songs and dances – you can watch them on 2nd July.

Saturday 2nd July

9.30pm Ölüdeniz Yarenler – five enterprising British residents of a certain age whom you should go and watch.

Oludeniz Yarenler will be just a few of the acts to take part in this years Oludeniz Festival

The nation is gradually falling in love with this group, so don't miss the chance to see them on their home ground.

10pm Moğollar – and the older British performers are followed by the grandfathers of Turkish folk rock.

The Moğollar (it means the 'Mongols') have been performing their unique brand of folk rock for over forty years.

If you want to know what they do, type the name into youtube.

Sunday 3rd July

10pm Muazzez Ersoy – a female 'Turkish classical and folk singer' according to Wikipedia, who has also been around for many years but is guaranteed not to look her age.

For the curious she'll be 53 in August and the market place will no doubt be crammed with her local Turkish fans for this concert.

As above, for a sample of Muazzez' music, consult youtube.

We do hope you will attend some, or all, of these events.

If you have family/friends staying it is an ideal way to expose them to a little Turkish musical culture – and it is all free.

Don't forget to charge your camera batteries for the event.
