Steve Fitzgerald writes about the new golfing society being set up here in Fethiye and asks for interested people to get in touch with him.
Here in Calis,Fethiye I am offering to start a Golf Society.
This will not be a financial business; it will not have an ownership and will be based solely as a members club.
There is currently no Golf course, nor is it likely that we “The Society” will have one, so please do not read this as a golf course development project. The closest we will get to a local course will be the Saregerme project which is not likely to come on stream until late 2011.
However, there are courses further afield East and West of Fethiye whereby as “A Society Member” you could take advantage of cost effective golf by way of shared transport cost and discounted rates through the Society against:-
• Playing the courses, [very advantageous rates are already in place]
• Hiring of equipment/buggies/trolley’s,
• Purchasing equipment/food/ beverages
• Hotel rates for groups
Through word of mouth and a note on the Calis Beach Forum 40 keen golfers residing in Turkey have already shown interest, and 25 UK based golfers also wish to be a part of the Society, all be it, the aim is to raise the Turkish resident figure significantly, with a wider local membership the opportunities to play increases, so generating golfing interest locally we can all realise our dreams of being able to play our loved game on a regular basis, maybe even competitions?
The proposal is that within the Tree Tops Sports and Social Club in Calis a practice green and a set of driving nets be installed. Tree Tops would act solely as a focal and meeting point giving members the opportunity to discuss arranging trips and away days at cost effective rates to golfing venues in Turkey or elsewhere? Not forgetting organised fun days/nights and linking with members of the resident Bowls Club in social events. Members could even practice their putting; take a few swings in the nets? Not the ideal situation but better than the nothing you currently don’t enjoy? And you could also have a go at bowls?
Further developments and discussion are currently in hand, notably the provision of a 200+m driving range, but this is still only in the discussion stage.
All that is needed at the moment is for you to show your interest in becoming a Golfing Society Member by e-mailing Steve Fitzgerald at firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:-
• First name
• Resident in Turkey (or indicate number of months per year you are resident) or,
• Generally only Holiday in Turkey but would like to participate and utilise the Society benefits
• Area of residence in Turkey (Calis, Fethiye, Uzumlu, etc etc)
• E-Mail address (for contact purposes ONLY and will NOT be shared without your consent)
• Telephone number (not mandatory but would be helpful)
• Level of golf (newcomers welcome)(be honest)
• Playing member, social member only or a joint membership with partner playing/social
The structure, rules and fees are yet to be discussed and set by YOU the Society Members. Remember it will be your club?
To get the Society up and running will take some time and a lot of effort to get everything organised. Please be patient as progress in Turkey can be slow BUT in the meantime we could still all get together at Tree Tops over a beer and talk about our other life — GOLF!!!!
Now it’s down to you to register your interest? If you want further information or want to visit Tree Tops for look at what’s on offer call Mike Chamberlain 0535 271 3924.
