In this weeks round up of the local news includes slippery when wet, back to school preparations begin, Fethiye mayor returns to work, street thief apprehended in dramatic style, car crash kills one person and police arrested two on suspicion of passing fake bank notes.
Slippery When Wet
Millions of drivers were expected to hit the roads and travel to see relatives or just get away over the weekend as Turkey celebrates the end of the Ramazan fast.
But the period is also marked by an increase in the number of road traffic incidents.
We witnessed the aftermath of one particularly serious accident on Sunday just outside Inlice near Gocek after a heavy spell of rain.
The car pictured above was in collision with a Havas transfer bus making its way to Fethiye.
An occupant of the car was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The passengers of the bus were transferred to a new bus for their onward journey.
Back to School
Anyone who visited the Tuesday Market last week couldn’t help but notice the stalls crammed with blue school uniforms marking back to school time.
Schools reopen on 24th September.
This year’s summer holiday was extended to include the Bayram at the end of Ramazan.
Fethiye Mayor Back to Work
Following his stabbing, the Mayor of Fethiye left hospital on Monday but was ordered to rest at home before returning to work.
His supporters gathered outside the Esnaf Hospital to applaud him as he emerged – what a novel way to leave hospital.
However, Mr Saatcı didn’t rest for long as he was back at his desk in the Council Offices on Thursday.
Drama on the streets of Fethiye as a man with a gun took a bag containing 200 thousand Lira from its owner (he was transferring the money from one bank to another when the armed robber grabbed the bag).
A ‘Stop Thief’ chase ensued and ended outside the Cultural Centre, where a reporter about to enter to attend a press conference saw the man running towards him – gun in one hand, bag in the other – and tackled him!
The whole incident was caught on security cameras, the thief was arrested, and the good Samaritan ended up in hospital as he had cut his head during the scuffle.
A nasty head-on crash on the main road to Antalya earlier in the week left 1 dead and 7 injured – 6 of them members of the same family.
The accident happened when one driver lost control after hitting a patch of loose grit on the road.
Dodgy Cash Couple Arrested
And the week ended with the arrest of two men in Fethiye passing counterfeit currency.
A special branch of the Police, set up to investigate organised crime, recovered quantities of 100 US Dollar, 100TL and 50TL notes when they arrested the two men.
