You don’t have to be here long to realise what an important role folk dancing plays in Turkish culture.  It is part of the national curriculum, so both boys and girls learn the traditional dances in school from the age of six.

And each year the Turkish Ministry of Education holds a nationwide contest for the best school folk dance team, which was won by a school in Fethiye last year.  So this year Fethiye gets to host the finals and you should really try to go and be part of the audience.  Friday 11th May, Tuesday Market Place starts around 8pm.  Teams from all over the country will be competing and for a sheer colourful spectacle it’s hard to beat.
