Rainfall Measurement

The rain has been a big feature this winter. The rain has been a big feature this winter. It feels as though hardly a day has passed without some precipitation.

But how do we convert the metric measurements to the more familiar inches?

The Turkish Meteorology service measures rain fall using Kg per m2.

But how do we convert the metric measurements to the more familiar inches?

So far in 2009 the total recorded rainfall has been 377kg. But what is that in inches?

• 1 kg/m2 is equivalent to 1mm of rain.
• so to get to inches divide the kg amount by 25.4
• thus 377kg/sqm is 14.8 inches of rain - a lot by anyone's standards!
