The Minister of Environment and Forestry Osman Pepe joined a ceremony in Gocek last week which was organised to inaugerate the ‘Turmepa-1’ waste disposal vessel.
The Minister of Environment and Forestry Osman Pepe joined a ceremony in Gocek last week which was organised to inaugerate the ‘Turmepa-1’ waste disposal vessel. The vessel has been brought into service to collect waste disposed from boats. Minister Pepe was given information about the vessel by the Turmepa founder and Honorary President, Rahmi Koc of Koc Holdings, and other executives.
At a simultaneous auction event in Gocek organised to support the waste disposal boat the pennant which was used on board a motor yacht belonging to Rahmi Koc, who has been on a world tour on his yacht for almost 2 years, was sold for 50,000 YTL at the auction. Painter Ismail Acar also presented a painting for the auction and this was sold for USD15,000 to businessman Semih Sohtirik.
Deniz Temiz Turmepa (Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association) was established in 1994 as the first NGO in Turkey advocating environmental protection issues for the sea. For the past ten years Turmepa has been working to make the public aware of the importance of a clean marine environment. In addition Turmepa say that they have involved the public, Turmepa volunteers and their ‘Sea Sweeper vessel’ in cleaning activities with the aim to ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the health, leisure and economic benefits of the sea.
