It would seem that nothing much happened in Fethiye during bayram week – bit like the UK over the Christmas period – but the week then ended with a murder which we report below.
Fethiye the Turkish Weather Hot Spot
We did have good weather during the week prompting a national news agency mid-week to write the headline ‘While Turkey Freezes, Fethiye Burns’.
The ensuing story mentioned a temperature of 220 downtown, had a photograph of people on the beach, and pointed out the paragliders who were still able to practise their sport, whilst the bulk of Turkey was in the grip of a cold snap coming across from the Balkans.
It also said that visitors who had decided to spend the bayram in Fethiye were the lucky ones – maybe there would have been more visitors if most of the hotels hadn’t closed down?
Three Sheets to the Wind
And for any reader who thinks teenage binge drinking is a uniquely British phenomenon, two young people aged 11 and 15 ended up having their stomachs pumped in the Devlet Hospital this week, after they imbibed so much alcohol that they lost consciousness.
They had sneaked out of their house in the night and gone to a neighbour’s where they joined a friend in consuming parental alcohol.
The two somehow made it home again prior to passing out.
When their parents found them they were rushed to the hospital and, fortunately, despite life-threatening levels of alcohol the medical intervention was in time, and they should be fine.
Kemer Murder
And a tragic murder in Kemer where a mere week ago a Turk from Trabzon and his Ukrainian-born wife settled with their three children aged 4, 6 and 8.
They rented a flat and the couple found work as waiters.
On Saturday 13th, after returning from work, the couple began to argue, the man cut his wife’s throat, took a shower, phoned the Jandarma and gave himself up.
The children are now in the care of Muğla Social Services.
Perhaps there never is a really quiet week in Fethiye?
