Residents of the village of Kaya village near Fethiye are in shock after being served demolition notices on 26 December by the local security services.

The village is the location of the famous tourist attraction known as the ‘ghost village’ that was abandoned by the Greeks after the population exchange between Greece and Turkey early in the 20th Century.

The area concerned is administered for planning purposes by the Ministry of Culture based in Ankara.

Around 160 properties, allegedly built without planning permission, have been served with notices that give residents until the 5th January to vacate their properties.

Some residents are confused though because copies of the demolition notices have not been left with them.

We’ll keep you posted as the facts emerge.
