Gemiler Shooter Given Life Sentence

Some readers may remember the tragic shooting in Kayaköy towards the end of 2007 when a man took his hunting rifle and killed three family members. 

This took place in public and was even witnessed by holiday makers enjoying an afternoon on the popular beach. 

All too often we hear about horrific incidents here without ever finding out what happened to the perpetrator. 

Well this week the trial of the man who shot his relatives finally ended and he was imprisoned for life.

Weather Woes

The weather affected everyone at the beginning of the week with floods and leaks being the main topic of conversation. 

We have already reported the floods in Ovacık, Hisarönü and Ölüdeniz but Kayaköy was also badly flooded. 

In fact long term residents say they haven’t had flooding like this for over 20 years. 

As many of them also have the threat of demolition hanging over their properties they now feel like they really ran out of luck.

Kordon Capers

And the torrential rain sank a fishing boat tied up to Fethiye Kordon. 

The 25 foot fishing boat quickly filled with rainwater and sank but fortunately it was winched up and bailed out once the rain had stopped.

Dolmus Fares Down

The Calis – Fethiye dolmus cooperative have reduced their fares from 1.50 TL to 1.25 TL.

The fare was increased last year when fuel prices shot up.

But the reason for the reduction doesn’t appear to be because of reducing fuel prices but that the local council run bus service has kept its fare at 75kr.

Savvy travellers could do the return journey on the council bus for the price of a one way fare on the Coop Dolmus.

It remains to be seen if the fare decrease will lure more passengers but it's a step in the right direction.
