The early arrival of spring, drugs bust, Fethiye tops birth rate list and more in this weeks www.fethiyetimes.com news snippets.
Spring is here, at least in Ölüdeniz where it was reported this week that fruit trees are in bloom.
Apparently the temperature hit 22 degrees centigrade one day and not only were people sunbathing on the beach – a few brave souls ventured into the sea.
Drug Dealers Busted
And after a surveillance operation which lasted eight months, seven men aged between 25 and 45 were arrested in Fethiye and charged with selling drugs.
355g of hashish was found on the suspects all neatly prepared for sale in small packages.
The Regional Director of Registrars, based in Muğla, issued his annual returns for 2008 and they make for an interesting read.
Last year 11,245 births were registered in Muğla, whilst a mere 4,542 deaths were recorded.
There were 6,651 marriages but only 667 divorces.
Fethiye topped the births list with 2,992 while Dalaman languished at the bottom with only 121. Maybe there are more power cuts in Fethiye than Dalaman?
And the ‘let’s make Fethiye a province’ story showed up again this week.
Durmuş Ʃmen, an 83-year-old retired barber who has been campaigning for province status for some time saying he wants to live to see Fethiye become a province in its own right, handed in a petition with 8,500 signatures to be sent to the Prime Minister.
According to Durmuş, in 1937 Atatürk said there should be a Mediterranean province centred on Fethiye so Durmuş now collects signatures under the slogan ‘This is Atatürk’s command’.
The local AK Party Chairman, to whom he handed the petition, commented that Fethiye actually has a higher economic rating than 40 of the existing provinces, and assured Durmuş that party funds would pay the postage on his petition.
