At last month’s meeting, members of the Garden Club witnessed the handing over of money which had been raised for a local boy who is fighting cancer.

Last year Tayfun fell at school and hurt his knee. He was taken to a local hospital and he was treated and given painkillers before being sent home to rest.

In spite of this treatment his pain did not subside and his knee began to swell so much so that, in May last year, after trying to cope for several weeks, he was taken to the regional hospital. Here the doctors diagnosed cancer.

Tayfun has bone cancer and a cancerous mass in his lungs.

This would be a tragedy for anyone, but for a sixteen year old boy who should be about to begin his journey into adulthood, this is heartbreaking.

His family are farmers living on the outskirts of our area in the village of Arsaköy and, since the devastating diagnosis they have been struggling to take Tayfun for his regular treatment sessions, sometimes in Antalya, but more usually in Izmir.

The trip to Izmir has to be made several times a month and sometimes the stay is long term, so not only is transport needed but accommodation for family too.

This has been an immense strain on the family and the financial responsibility has been ruinous.

The village has been supporting the family in many ways, not least by providing transport to Izmir, indeed members of our club have financed one such trip, and it was a chance remark to other members at the Garden Club Quiz which resulted in the raffle which took place at the Christmas club event.

Members were very generous, both with donated prizes and buying tickets and 700 Lira was raised which is a testament to the compassion of club members and their friends.

The money was added to by Hash House Harriers and private donations.

A frail Tayfun and his father came to the February meeting to receive the contribution which had swelled to over 900 Lira.

Tayfun and his family (he has 6 brothers and sisters) are doing their best to cope.

His weakened immune system demands the greatest care when preparing his food and his knee is causing great concern and may mean that amputation will be necessary.

Tayfun and his family wish to thank everyone who contributed, not just for the money but for their thoughts and empathy.

One village neighbour summarised their feelings “This has brought a star into a very dark sky.”
