In this weeks round of the local news we hear how a boy racer and his passenger have a lucky escape, pine and punishment, a bar blaze and that credit card fraudsters are caught.

Lucky Escape

It’s been some weeks since we had news of a spectacular accident but this week there’s an amazing one, with the bonus of no loss of life.

Last Wednesday, just before midnight, a car was driven far too fast down a hill in 2. Karagözler, it left the ground, flew approximately 12 metres through the air and landed in an olive tree.

It brought the tree down but, had it not hit the tree it would have landed on the roof of a house below where the English tenant was asleep, when she was awoken by the crash as the tree, with car on top of it, came down.

She ran out of the house and helped the driver and his passenger get out of the car.

Both were, according to the Police, drunk.

The Police are still working on what charges to bring.

Pine and Punishment

A 49 year old man who lives in the village of ơykenarı near Fethiye is working his way through a somewhat unusual punishment.

Last year he was accused of cutting down a pine tree which belonged to the Forestry Commission and, when found guilty, was offered the choice of 10 months in prison or a 6,000TL fine.

But he was give and third choice and he is now doing 10-months unpaid work for the village school, and has so far painted the whole building, inside and out, and planted 15 pine saplings in the school garden.

He started work last August and will finish in June, leaving a saddened population of students and teachers who have all grown used to his presence.

Bar Blaze

A bar in Ölüdeniz went up in flames this week causing significant damage to the neighbouring establishments on either side.

The fire started in the Tekilo Bar, which the owners say had been newly refurbished for the coming season, and which was totally gutted.

The news agency does not reveal the names of the adjacent premises which were damaged but, no doubt, keen visitors to bars in Ölüdeniz will know what they are.

Fraudster’s caught red handed

Three people were arrested in Fethiye this week in connection with fake credit cards, 14 of which were found in their possession.

They were all copies of credit cards owned by foreigners so make sure you check your statements carefully just in case your card was one of those cloned.
