Fethiye will be full of celebration today as the Cocuk Bayrami (Children’s Holiday) takes place.
The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, dedicated April 23 to the children of the country to emphasise that they are the future of the new nation.
He also named the day ‘National Sovereignty day’ as it was on April 23 1920 that the Grand National Assembly first met in Ankara to create the new Turkish state.
Celebrations will be held all over Turkey.
In Fethiye the football stadium will host a big display of children drumming and waving large colourful fans in the first part of the day.
The celebrations will then move to Cultural Centre in the afternoon and evening with more events taking place.
Turkish households and businesses will display the Turkish flag to mark the day.
The next Byram will be the Sports Byram on 19th May.
