In this weeks round of the local news a Fethiye student tops exam results board,  free flights on the beach, popular bays closed to boats and boat owners start petition.

Top of the Class

On 13th June this year children reaching the end of year 6 in school took national tests. 

Almost 1.1 million pupils took the tests and nationally 8 children answered all the questions correctly – and one of the 8 lives in Fethiye. 

Overall children attending private schools scored higher than those in the state system and Ezgi Yaren Önder, the high achiever from Fethiye, is a pupil at the private Ata School. 

This does not make for confidence in the state system and we wonder about the wisdom of actually publishing the names of the 8 ‘perfect’ students.

Popular Bays Closed

From 1st August certain bays in and around Göcek are to be closed to boats as part of a campaign to preserve the environment. 

Fethiye’s Mayor is not happy with this move which will affect the day boat trips from Fethiye. 

But it looks as though local representatives of national environmental charities have won the day and some small bays and coves will be closed. 

No-one is saying how this is going to be policed, so if you are out on a boat and prevented from entering a bay – let us know.

12 Islands No More

Meanwhile some of the day boats who regularly do the twelve island tours from Fethiye have started a petition against the closures – Yassica Island is on the list of ‘closed’ destinations. 

Maybe they should change their signs to ’11 islands boat tour’ – but it just doesn’t have the same ring, does it?
