A practice run for Fethiye’s first Race for Life – Turkey, took place in bright sunshine on Fethiye’s promenade last Sunday, 19th October. The organisers were amazed and delighted by the attendance for the ‘Test the Course’ event with more than 100 people turning out to take part.
Fine tuning for the big event
Fethiye resident, George Rimmer, whose idea it was to bring the UK fund raising and cancer awareness event to Fethiye, said after the practice race that the feedback has been remarkably positive: “We have learned so much about how we can fine tune Race for Life – Turkey in order to make this a really first class annual event for Fethiye”.
He also said it was also a great opportunity to register for the main event, which will take place at 10am on April 12th 2015 at 10:00am at the Fethiye Culture Centre. “Already many have registered for the big event and pre orders have been taken for our red and white race tee shirts, designed to honour the Turkish flag.
A chance for everyone
The organisers have always stipulated that the course should be accessible for everyone: flat, not have any roads to cross and expressly a route that is inclusive for runners, walkers, joggers and those with a disability of any kind. They also wanted the start and finish line to be outside the Fethiye Culture Centre in order to show off some of the best features of the town.
Expert input and positive feedback
As George Rimmer explained, the day’s success was partly due to two very experienced runners, Patricia Meldrum and Steve Williams. “The committee is very grateful to have these two as part of the management team. When asked to design our five kilometre course, they devised a spectacular coastline route”.
He continued, “To test the route we decided that it would be a good idea to ask people to run, walk, jog and wheelchair our course and give us some feedback”.
FETAV spokesperson, and Fethiye’s Honorary British Consul, Mustafa Şıkman, took part on Sunday (see below: front of picture) and has already registered for the big day in April. After the race he said, “I think it’s fantastic that Fethiye is hosting Race For Life – Turkey. This kind of fund raising event is new here but I am sure that there will many more participants on the day and hopefully this will be the first of many such events for our town.”
And the winners were…
There were some excellent times clocked up over the five kilometre course from the winners of the practice event:

3rd Kerem Demirtaş: 24:36

Community spirited sponsors
There will be a series of registration events leading up to the race, one of the sponsors, Erasta Shopping Mall, has given the organisers unprecedented access to use their indoor facility, something the committee will be taking full advantage of this during the coming months.
Register now and pre-order your tee-shirt!
The committee will be working hard during the winter months and George Rimmer said, “Look out for us at the Erasta Shopping Mall and the Çalış Christmas Fair, where you can register, pick up your sponsor forms and give a pre order for your official race T Shirt which are just 20TL.
“Race for Life – Turkey is open to men and women, there will also be a children’s ‘short course’ event taking place on Saturday April 11th 2015. Please make sure you pre-register to join the event, as registrations on race day will not be possible”.
