As part of the celebrations for the 15th Ölüdeniz Air Games, on two occasions the skies above Ölüdeniz and Çalış beaches will provide spectacular backdrops for displays by the Turkish Stars (Türk Yıldızları).
Displays above Ölüdeniz and Çalış
The Turkish Stars will demonstrate their extraordinary aerobatic skills in the skies above Fethiye.
The first chance to see the Turkish Stars will be in a series of fly-pasts above Ölüdeniz on 23rd October at 12 noon.
However, the main event will be directly above Çalış Beach on 25th October at 3.45pm.
Turkey’s famous flying squad
The Turkish Stars are the aerobatic demonstration team of the Turkish Air Force and the national aerobatics team of Turkey.
The team was formed in November 1992 and was named the Turkish Stars in January 1993.
Everyone who has seen a display by these skilled and courageous pilots in the past will know exactly how exciting it is to see them perform; it really is a spectacle not to be missed.
The technical stuff
Turkish Stars fly with eight Canadair NF-5s, obtained from the Royal Netherlands Air Force, making them one of the few national aerobatics teams to fly supersonic aircraft, and the only one with formations of eight supersonic jets. Twelve F-5s are available to the team.
The team uses CN-235, C-130 Hercules and Transall C-160 support aircraft in Turkish Stars colours. It is stationed at the Konya Air Base of 3rd Main Jet Base Group Command.
A five-day celebration of flying
The 15th Ölüdeniz Air Games, as in previous years, is a five-day celebration of flying.
In addition to the Turkish Stars there will also be events with jaw-dropping feats by paragliders from all over the world.
Here is an incredible film with glimpses of their aerobatics from lasts year’s games:
World class paragliding pilots will be flying from the 1,200 metre take-off on Babadağ, the mountain that dominates the landscape behind Ölüdeniz.
The main paragliding event will be from 12 – 3pm on 25th October.
