Calis Beach near Fethiye is one of the popular holiday resorts of Turkey.
But the beach, that is cared for by the Mugla Buyuksehir, was in dire need of a deep clean after the winter.
However, when attempts to get the beach cleaned in time for the start of the tourist season fell on deaf ears it was the local community that pulled together to sort out the mess.
Community Pride and Team Work
On Monday 12th May 2014 bar owners, residents of Calis and the local Council joined together to clean up Calis Beach.
No grain was left unturned as the volunteers and a workforce from Fethiye Belediye donned gloves, grabbed black bags and picked, raked and sifted plastic, metal, cigarette butts, wood and other detritus from the popular Turkish resort beach.
George Rimmer local resident and one of the beach clean up volunteers said:
“Today has been a great day for Calis and shows how when we all join together we can solve a problem that the local Mugla authority seemed unable to do. Now the beach is clean it won’t take much to keep it clean from now on.”
In the afternoon trucks turned up to take away the concrete and other items that were too heavy to bag up from the beach.
The pictures show just how effective the beach clean effort was today and the power of community action.
