Bring A Gun Get A Book

School children in Fethiye were encouraged to bring a toy gun to school and exchange it for a book last week.

The event took place at the Tuesday market before moving to the town square and included music and dance.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging children to read and expand their minds.

Red Gold

Fethiye tomato production reached a record 81,000 tonnes for the first quarter of 2014 it was reported last week squashing the previous year’s 55,000 tonnes.

The harvest is sold locally, nationally and is also exported to countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Poland and Iraq.

Solo Paraglider Falls to His Death

A Bulgarian solo paraglider died after falling into the sea when his parachute malfunctioned on Monday 21st April 2014.

The man was on holiday with two other male solo paragliders who also flew from the world famous Oludeniz – Babadag mountain in southern Turkey.

This is the first fatality of the 2014 paragliding season.

The local authorities have been working hard to reduce the number of paragliding injuries and fatalities and introduced new licensing requirements for tandem paragliders last year.

Last year a Norwegian male solo pilot crashed shortly after take-off and died from his injuries.

Food Flight

The local press reported that almost 70 staff working on the construction of the new shopping centre in Fethiye fell ill with suspected food poisoning after eating at the works canteen.

Some of the workers affected were admitted to hospital.

Children’s Day Celebrated

Wednesday marked the national Sovereignty and Children’s Day all over Turkey. It also marked the 94th anniversary of the Turkish Parliament.

Thousands of kids packed into the town square to take part in events.

The mayor of Fethiye and Governor also attended.

Driver Drowned

A driver drowned when his car left the road around midnight on Wednesday and ended up in the main Fethiye irrigation channel in the Calıca area of Fethiye.

Mushroom Festival

This year’s Uzumlu Mushroom Festival took place over the weekend and was well attended.

The festival celebrates the diverse environmental conditions of the village and surrounding countryside where the coveted and valuable Morel mushroom.

Morels are exported to countries such as the UK and Japan and command prices of between 100 and 120 TL per Kilo.
