Mayor Hits the Ground Running
The Mayor of Fethiye Behcet Saatci has been meeting and greeting all week following his election win on 30th March in the Turkish local elections.
He was visited by former Mayor of Oludeniz and election competitor Keramettin Yilmaz who wished him every success in what is to be his forth term.
On Tuesday he provided a free meal of beans, rice and other pickles to market goers to say thank you to his voters. He even served some of the diners in person it was reported.
Later in the week the Mayor visited the Karachula area of Fethiye and the offices of the former council. Karachula was a separate council but is now under the larger and expanded Fethiye Council.
The Mayor met with staff where, it is reported, he set out his vision, plans as well as the ethics and standards that he will expect of all his staff old and new.
Rescue services took part in a joint earthquake drill last week to test their skills and response to a 7.2 earthquake.
The drill took place at the Melsa Anadolu Saglık Meslek Lisesi and tested scenarios including evacuation routines, fires inside and outside the building and rescue from the buildings.
It was reported that the drill was a great success and a timely reminder that as Fethiye is located in a high risk earthquake zone we all need to be prepared should the worst happen.
One person died and another was injured when an articulated cement truck crashed on the Antalya- Fethiye highway near Seydikemer last week.
Green Fingered Footballers
Players and managers from local football club Fethiyespor joined forces with local environmental group TEMA and the Forestry Commission last week to plant saplings.
They planted around 1,500 pine tree saplings and then watered each one in.
Police Celebrate 169 Years
A ceremony was held in Beskaz square last week to celebrate 169th anniversary of the Turkish police.
Wreaths were laid before the Ataturk monument by the Fethiye Police Chief and his family.
First Cruise Ship of The Season
The 2014 cruising season got off to a good start last week when the Aegean Odyssey docked alongside the municipal quay.
Around 336 American, British and European tourists disembarked to go on excursions or just wander around the town.
