Ephesus – Selçuk

Most people visit Ephesus without even being aware of the town of Selçuk next door, but the town itself is well worth a visit.

Barım Pansiyon, Selcuk

As its name implies it was an important centre of commerce and habitation during the Selçuk rule of Turkey.

Now it has a pleasant old quarter filled with Ottoman houses, several of which have been converted into guest houses and small hotels.

We stayed in one, the Barım Pansiyon, see the photo above, run by Reçep and Cemile.

They are open all year round and are lovely, welcoming people.

Selçuk market is held on Saturdays and is a much more traditional affair than its Fethiye equivalent, with stalls selling animal harness and felt, and a couple of guys who deal in old copper pots and bowls – and their prices are good.

Just wandering around the old quarter is a good way to end an evening.

There are shops selling souvenirs you won't find in Fethiye, lots of old mosques, tombs and hamams many dating from the Selçuk era.

And our favourite find in a back street is the house with a face.
