This ancient celebrity was born in the town that is now known as Bodrum.

Herodotus, known as the 'father of history' was born in Halicarnassus around 484BC.

The famous Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was not built then.

Herodotus and his family left Halicarnassus when he was still quite young, forced into exile on what is now the Greek island of Samos.

From there he spent his life travelling, collecting information for his Histories, and spent the final years of his life in Italy.

However, in a time before surnames, when people were identified with the place of their origin, he was known, and is still known, as Herodotus of Halicarnassus.
