What is a New Year’s Resolution?

A New Year’s resolution is a decision to do or not do something to accomplish a personal goal or break a habit.

It comes at a time when people look back at the past year and make an effort to improve themselves as the new year begins.

New Year’s resolutions are often health-driven, following the eating, drinking and partying of the Christmas period.

How did New Year’s Resolutions start?

Setting New Year’s resolutions is believed to go as far back as Babylonian times. It’s said that Julius Caesar started the tradition of making resolutions on January 1st as a way to honor the Roman mythical god Janus, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past year and forward to the new year. Romans mostly made morality-based resolutions, such as seeking forgiveness from their enemies.

Sticking to New Year’s Resolutions

In the enthusiasm and glow of the beginning of a New Year, people make resolutions that they have every intention of keeping. Lists of important lifestyle changes you want to make are written and put in prominent places as reminders; on the fridge door, in a diary, on post-its everywhere…sound familiar?

So why then, despite our best efforts, will a quarter of resolutions be abandoned by the end of the first week of the New Year?

The main reason is that people set unrealistic goals so keep them realistic and expect small changes. Just think how motivating it is when you break your goal down into something manageable and succeed!

“I think in terms of the day’s resolutions, not the year’s.”
