A preview of Fethiye’s cultural festivals this May
The month of May has become a highlight of Fethiye’s cultural calendar, and this year is no exception when the town celebrates its 9th Arts Festival, which includes the 4th World Music Festival.
All of the events have been organised by the industrious and dedicated team at FETAV (Fethiye Tourism Promotion Education Culture and Environment Foundation), and there is sure to be events that appeal to all tastes.
Dates for your diary
The festivities run for over a week, from Saturday May 7th until Sunday May 15th.
World Music Festival
The World Music Festival will begin with the opening concert at 9pm on Thursday May 12th, and will continue with four consecutive nights of free performances.
Each three-hour concert will be full of magnificent musical performances by artists such as violinist Scott Jeffers from Arizona, and Iran’s, Ira Ensemble and Tehran Ensemble. Performers from Scotland, Ukraine, Russia, Indonesia, Greece and Turkey are also expected. It is sure to be a real treat.
Music in Kayaköy
Kayakoy Music Festival will be held on the afternoon of Friday 13th May, and will also welcome musicians from the local region and around the world.
Another highlight will be the Lycian Carnival, to be held on Saturday 14th May. This parade will be a wonderful visual display, beginning in Beşkaza Square. The celebrations will continue with music and dance. During the carnival, the Festival’s Prince and Princess will be selected from young people with disabilities.
Artists – live!
On the afternoon of Wednesday 11th, you can watch the Artists Live Performance; see wonders created before your eyes with paint and canvas. That night, FBKM and Mine Sarmış will host an evening of live poetry readings.
Anatolian Culture Fair
The Anatolian Culture Fair will be open all week, from Saturday 7th of May. This outdoor market will be full of local products for sale, from Fethiye and all across Turkey.
Arts, Photography and Poetry exhibitions will be held throughout the week at Beşkaza Square (in front of Fethiye Culture Centre – FBKM), also inside FBKM’s exhibition hall and foyer, as well at Erasta shopping centre. There will be a Book Fair and Book Signing event with publishers, authors and poets, continuing everyday from May 9th to 15th, also in Beşkaza Square. There will also be various talks by Turkish authors and political figures throughout the city. In addition, there is a huge programme of events in many of Fethiye’s schools.
The Festivals programme is absolutely heaving with activity; far too much to list everything here. However, here are some highlights of the programme which I hope you will enjoy.
