For the seventh year running there will be a Morel Mushroom Festival held in Yeşilüzümlü this year.

Fethiye Municipality will be organising the event and from 10th -12th April there

will be a chance to hunt for, learn about and eat these delicious wild fungi.

There will also be opportunities  to taste and buy other local foods, while listening to music,

watching local folk dancing and other Turkish delights.

Lost in translation?

The morel or Morchella esculenta is ‘Kuzugöbeği’ in Turkish. The word translates as lambs’ bellies or perhaps umbilicus,

and in a way they do look a bit like small, wrinkly intestines, but perhaps it’s better not to dwell on that!

Whatever the case, these are considered to be a relatively rare, highly prized and very delicious delicacy.

A morel maze

In the village of green grapes, which is the literal translation of Yeşilüzümlü, life usually runs at a slower pace.

However, this alpine district of Fethiye acquires an almost Bacchanalian energy during the three-day festival.

Üzümlü will fill with experts, enthusiasts and aficionados, who will share their passion for mushrooms, and

sell their wares at scores of stalls with local people cooking delicious foods and selling local produce on their doorsteps

in and around the village streets.

An annual event

As Yeşilüzümlü is now a district of Fethiye, the three-day festival is being organised by the town’s

municipality, but it can be assumed that the well established structure from previous years will

continue to be used to celebrate the delicious and much prized mushroom that grows in abundance

at this time of year in the region’s forests.
