Popular Pastime

The local Fethiye Hash House Harriers group was set up by Alan “Wicked Willy” Prior, a resident of the area, some 3 years ago.

He placed an advert in the local paper asking for any interested Hashers to come forward to set up a local group. He only received two replies but they met up and so began the group.

Three years on and numbers have swollen to around 100 through word of mouth recommendations.

Course with a Twist

{mosimage}Fethiye Times joined the Fethiye Hash House Harriers last Sunday in Kaya Koy for one of their fortnightly events. Around 70 people took part.

The format is quite simple but with a twist. Participants run or walk a course as laid out. Markers are left on the ground in flour but some are false adding fun and a bit of extra exercise to the route.

www.fethiyetimes.com decided to walk rather than run the course and took up back marker status along with Malcolm the Fethiye Hash House Harriers medic.

It was quite a sight for the villagers to see such a large group pounding the tarmac out of the holiday season but everyone one was friendly if not a bit puzzled.

As we walked we chatted with various people and before we knew it we had arrived at the finish.

We were handed a beer or soft drink and then the fun began. The group formed a large circle and Alan took the centre stage. With the club mascot, a toilet seat, he began the address to the group.

Circle of Fun

{mosimage}First to be welcomed to the centre was Gerry and Gloria for marking the course and they were presented with small silver cups of beer for their efforts.

More people were then called to the centre. One couple for turning up after the Hash run was over, another for wearing pink (apparently no one should wear pink on a Hash), Gerry again for doing something funny, one member for completing 50 runs (they received a nice tankard and some eggs), returning Hasher’s, and then us for being the newest members. All were treated to a small glass of beer.

The group then headed off to a local restaurant for Sunday lunch.

Hash for Cash

Each participant pays 5 TL to take part in each event which goes towards refreshments. But every three months the group donates entrance fees to a local good cause. This time 500 TL was donated to Fethiye F.I.G to buy heaters for a school in the mountains.

Next Event

The next Fethiye Hash House Harriers run/walk will be held on Sunday 15 February in Oludeniz. Meet in the car park on the road to Faralya just by the Oludeniz Resort Hotel. Lunch will be at the Morning Star in Ovacik.
